How to Follow Up After a Job Interview

A good follow-up keeps you top of mind and reinforces that you're organized and genuinely interested. Most candidates skip it, which makes it an easy edge.

Send a thank-you within 24 hours. Email each person you met, or the recruiter if you only have one contact. Keep it short and specific.

Reference something real from the conversation. Mention a topic you discussed and briefly reconnect it to how you'd add value. This proves you were engaged.

Reiterate your interest and fit in one or two lines. Restate why you're excited and what makes you a strong match.

Keep it professional and brief. A few sentences is plenty; a long essay works against you.

If you don't hear back by the timeline they gave, it's fine to send one polite check-in a few days later. Ask about next steps and restate your interest.

Don't over-follow-up. One thank-you and, if needed, one check-in is the right amount. Repeated messages read as anxious. If you're still waiting, keep applying and interviewing elsewhere so no single role holds up your search.
