Not every job requires a cover letter, but a strong one can tip a close decision in your favor, especially for competitive or career-change roles.
Skip the generic opening. "I am writing to apply for the position of..." wastes your best line. Open with why you're a strong fit or a quick, relevant win.
Keep it to one page, three or four short paragraphs. Recruiters skim, so make every line earn its place.
Mirror the job description. Identify the two or three things the role most needs, then show, with a specific example, that you've done exactly that.
Quantify your impact. "Cut order errors 30%" beats "detail-oriented" every time.
Address it to a person when you can. A name beats "To Whom It May Concern." Check the posting and the company site.
Close with a clear, confident call to action. Say you'd welcome the chance to talk and thank them for their time.
Finally, proofread ruthlessly and save it as a PDF so your formatting survives. A tailored, error-free letter signals exactly the care employers want to see.
